
Situated on the northern shore of the peninsula
Peljesac in the Neretva channel, at the foot of Mt. Velji vrh (474 m) and Viter (629 m).
Trpanj is a city and a port and since 1997 an administrative center. It is the most famous tourist destination on the northern coast of
Peljesac . It is connected with the port of Ploce by a ferry line. The city grew near a roman villa rusticate. Above the port there are remains of the medieval fort, Gradina.
Trpanj is mentioned in the XII century for the first time as Trepen. It is believed that the name has

a root in Latin word
drepanon – sickle. The inhabitants of Trpanj have been the main fishermen of the peninsula for several centuries, especially in fishing for sardele, with the best catches in nearby bays. Today here lives about 700 people, whose main occupation is farming and tourism industry. In
Trpanj is a parish neoromanic church of St. Peter and Paul, built by using the pieces of the elder, and orphanage in 1902. There is the church of the Lady of Karmela with the altar in the renaissance style and the emblem of family Gundulic. At the end of the town is a chapel with the baric style wooden altar. On the islet in the port there is a statue of the Mother of God – the Star of the Sea, sort of a trade mark of
Trpanj.
