Orebic apartments

It is a city, harbour and the tourist destination on the southwestern shore of the peninsula, in
Peljesac channel which has historically been the main nautical route along the eastern coast of the Adriatic sea. Situated at the foot of the highest Peljesac mountin, St. Ilija
(961 m) and Vizanjica (443m). It is connected with the island and the city of Korcula with by a half an hour long ferry ride.
Orebic is the largest town in Peljesac, with a population of 2000. It was inhabited in Roman times, the remains of grave sites and villa rusticae are found. It is first mentioned in
Dubrovnik historical documents from the XIV century, named Trstenica. Today that is the name of the longest beach and the bay east of
Orebic. The family
Orebic built a castle on the shore in 1568, around which other families started building their homes. This family gave almost eighty nautical captains, but there is no known members today. Since the XVI century,
Orebic has been a significant ship and nautical center, and in 1856 the
Peljesac Nautical Society was founded here.The parish Church of Pomocnica krscana was built in 1884, there is a Franciscan Monastery above the city of
Orebic and the church Madonna of Angels, the patron church of seamen with valuable artifacts. Around the monastery and the church a rare cempres forest is spreading, the largest in Dalmacija, and therefore under protection. There is the Nautical Museum in the city, established by HAZU in 1957. It contains a collection of archaelogical findings, but the most of the items depict burnu nautical past of this area. The great treasure of Orebic are its beautiful stone houses of the captains of Peljesac surrounded with large gardens, lush in egzotic vegetation. Such houses are common in neighbouring towns of
Viganj and Kuciste.
